Aryna crowned as Madrid Open champion for 3rd time

Shilpa Rajan     May 8, 2025

Aryna Sabalenka, Australian Open runner-up and three-time Grand Slam champion, continues her domination in women’s tennis. The 26-year-old has won the Madrid Open 2025. This is her 9th WTA 1000 title and the third one in Madrid. Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff in a one-sided final. She is now on level with Petra Kvitova with the most number of titles in Madrid.

Aryna Sabalenka: Domination in first set

Aryna Sabalenka needed some momentum to keep her foot in the final. She dominantly began the match. The 26-year-old was the first one to break in the match. She broke Gauff early in the first set. Sabalenka took no time to make her second break in the set. She led 4-1 at one point in time.

The young American was under a lot of pressure in the final. Gauff tried to make a comeback. After giving away back-to-back breaks, she made a break of her own to take the score to 4-2. Despite her efforts, she was unable to stop Sabalenka. The Belarusian tennis player won her third break point to win the set 6-3. Sabalenka converted three out of the five break points earned in the match. Gauff struggled a lot with her serve as she made three double faults and only had a 53% success rate on first serve.

Competitive second set

Coco Gauff had to make a comeback to remain in the match. She broke first in the second set. Gauff led the set 3-1. Sabalenka knew that she couldn’t let the match go into a third set. She broke back later in the set to level it at 5-5. There was nothing to separate these two. The set went into a tiebreaker. Sabalenka won it 7-3 to win her third title in Madrid. Once again, Gauff struggled with her first serve, and she had to settle for the runners-up trophy.

Can Ruud overcome Draper’s challenge?

Casper Ruud will be up against Jack Draper in the men’s final. This will be their first-ever meeting on the court. Draper is currently ranked sixth in the world and is ranked as the favourite to win this match. Ruud, on the other hand, is ranked 15th but has more professional experience than the 23-year-old. The odds of Draper winning are 4/9, and Ruud’s win has odds of 7/4.

Aryna

Both players have the potential to win this title in Madrid. Jack Draper is eyeing his second ATP 1000 title. The youngster grabbed his first one at the Indian Wells earlier this year. Draper has shown the potential of becoming a Grand Slam champion, and a win in Madrid will give him a lot of confidence for the upcoming French Open.

Casper Ruud, on the other hand, is still on the hunt for his first ATP 1000 title. The Norwegian is set to play in his third final, with the last one being at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2024. This is his second final on a clay court and a huge opportunity to build some momentum for the French Open.
