Premier League weekend review: What we learned
The Rivalry Has Peaked Between Man City and Arsenal
The tension between Manchester City and Arsenal was for all to see in their latest 2-2 draw, setting the stage for what promises to be an iconic and fierce rivalry. Just moments after John Stones had dramatically equalized Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes collided, symbolizing the truly fiery atmosphere that’s brewing between the two clubs. The aggressive and fractious encounter was thrilling for spectators from start to finish and showcased the growing animosity between the teams.
The City players like Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva criticized Arsenal’s very tactical and defensive approach and referred to their use of “dark arts” and suggesting they were not interested in playing “real” football. Walker called Arsenal’s strategy “clever and/or dirty,” depending on one’s perspective. The brewing rivalry has the potential to be reminiscent of the fiery clashes between Arsenal and Manchester United during the peak Arsène Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson years.
The Aston Villa Squad Has Depth
Aston Villa’s strong squad depth was on full display in their recent 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite an extremely poor first half where they trailed by a goal the Villains made a remarkable second-half comeback. Unai Emery credited the turnaround to his team playing with more heart, but it was clear that Villa’s deep bench made the real difference. Substitutes like Jhon Duran, Leon Bailey, and Ian Maatsen played pivotal roles in the comeback, highlighting Villa’s ability to make truly impactful changes during tough matches.
Villa’s depth gives them the strength to compete in tough situations, suggesting they may even surpass their impressive fourth-place finish from last season.
Spurs Bounce Back with Style
Tottenham Hotspur’s comeback win against Coventry City in the EFL Cup seemed to have sparked a revival for Ange Postecoglou’s side. After a late turnaround in midweek, Spurs delivered a fantastic performance in their 3-1 win over Brentford. Their high pressing and fast breaks overwhelmed Brentford, with James Maddison playing a key role in their success.
While Brentford made things easier by playing a high-risk game, Spurs’ fluid play was reminiscent of the best moments from Postecoglou’s tenure. With an xG of 3.5, Tottenham’s performance was their second-best under the new manager, signaling that they may be finding their rhythm again.
Manchester United’s Defense Looks to be on the Rise
Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace might not have been a great spectacle, but it highlighted a significant improvement in their defense line. Erik ten Hag has managed to tighten things at the back, with United conceding far fewer shots and goals this season compared to last. Boasting three clean sheets in their last five matches, United’s defensive foundation looks strong, though their wastefulness in front of goal remains to be an issue.
If Man United can start converting their chances, they could possibly turn solid defensive performances into more wins and finally build momentum for the rest of the season.
West Ham’s Tactical Misstep Costly Against Chelsea
West Ham’s poor tactics definitely allowed Chelsea to dominate their recent encounter. Julen Lopetegui’s decision to play Edson Alvarez out of position as a center-back certainly backfired, as the player was repeatedly outmaneuvered by Chelsea’s forwards, particularly Nicolas Jackson. The defensive gaps left West Ham vulnerable and Jackson capitalized with a first-half brace.
West Ham’s tactical confusion and lack of cohesion played a significant role in their defeat to an improving Chelsea side.
Lowly Everton Show Some Signs of Improvement
Despite being bottom of the table, Everton’s performance against Leicester City showed that they still have hope to finish much higher up the table. Iliman Ndiaye’s impressive display, including a well-taken goal and the four key chances created has suggested that Everton are close to securing their first win of the season. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin also regaining form, Everton could soon be climbing out of the relegation zone.
New Look Liverpool Look Revitalized with Diaz and Gravenberch
Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch have breathed new life into the Liverpool squad this season. Diaz, who had struggled much of the last year, has already scored five goals in five matches which makes him one of the team’s top performers. Gravenberch, meanwhile, has been a key figure in midfield, consistently contributing to both defense and offence. Their form has helped Liverpool overcome doubts about their summer transfer activity and provided manager Arne Slot with a rejuvenated squad.
As the Liverpool players continue to settle into their respective roles under their new manager, the team looks set for a strong campaign. Diaz and Gravenberch, in particular, have emerged as key players for the Reds.
