Day 2 of the competition concluded with several big names advancing to the next round. However, the potential for upsets loomed large, as evidenced by some prominent players facing early elimination. Despite these surprises, many stars showcased their class. Here is a summary of the key events from Day 2.

Novak Djokovic progresses in Wimbledon

Following his exit from the recently concluded French Open, the Serbian powerhouse Novak Djokovic returned to the Grand Slam stage after recovering from a knee injury. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is in pursuit of his 25th Grand Slam title. Wearing a kneecap for this match, Djokovic wasted no time in showcasing his class, winning in straight sets. The first set went 6-1 in favor of the Serb, while the next two sets ended 6-2. Djokovic completed six of his 15 break points and delivered 10 aces. He will face Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in the next round.

Andrey Rublev knocked out

Andrey Rublev, seeded sixth in the current tournament, suffered a shock defeat to Argentina’s Francisco Comesana. The 23-year-old Comesana won the first set 6-4. Rublev made a comeback, winning the second set 7-5. However, Comesana showed his class in the third set, taking it 6-2. The fourth set was a nail-biter, with Comesana ultimately winning 7-6 after clinching the tiebreaker 7-5. Rublev, who has been a regular fixture in the last 16 and last 8 of recent Grand Slams, faced a surprising early exit from the competition.

Other big names advance

The likes of Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz, Ons Jabeur, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and Jessica Pegula were also in action on Day 2 of Wimbledon 2024.

French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev started his Wimbledon campaign in style, defeating his Spanish opponent Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets (6-2, 6-4, 6-2). Hubert Hurkacz faced a bit of a scare in his opening match, losing the first set 7-5 to his Moldovan opponent Radu Albot. However, the Polish player made a strong comeback, winning the next three sets.

Another Polish sensation and French Open winner, Iga Swiatek, began her hunt for a sixth Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sofia Kenin of the United States. Swiatek, who has never made it past the quarterfinal stage at Wimbledon, is eager to improve her record in this competition.
