Coco Gauff’s Grand Victory: First French Open, Second Slam

Shilpa Rajan     June 19, 2025

Coco Gauff’s remarkable run at the French Open 2025 ended in glory as the 21-year-old clinched her second Grand Slam title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka. It was a comeback victory for the youngster against the three-time Grand Slam winner. Gauff became the first American woman in 10 years to win this title. Serena Williams won her last French Open in 2015.

Sabalenka takes early advantage

The first set was just the opener that the fans wanted. There was some end-to-end stuff going on between these two world-class players. It was Sabalenka who took the first break. This set was played for 78 minutes and was eventually won by the world no. 1. Aryna won the set 7-6 after winning the tie breaker 7-5.

Sabalenka and Gauff broke four times each in the first set. Aryna had a better success rate as she converted 50% of her break points earned. Gauff, on the other hand, struggled a bit to convert her break points. She had a 31% success rate. Sabalenka won the set, but Gauff was still in the game.

Coco Gauff’s Dominant comeback

Coco Gauff needed to win the second set to remain in the game. It took her 36 minutes to wrap up the second set 6-2. Aryna struggled a bit on the first serve as she only had a 52% success rate. She broke once in the set, but Gauff stood out as the better player. Gauff’s 68% success rate on the first serve and her conversion of three break points out of the four earned helped her clinch the set.

Coco Gauff's

Aryna Sabalenka struggled in the second set, but this was her biggest chance to win her fourth Grand Slam. Gauff was proving to be a tough customer. Sabalenka improved her first serve to 70%. However, this was not enough to stop Gauff. She was the first one to break in the set. Sabalenka then made a comeback by making a break of her own. However, Gauff had other ideas and she broke once again in the set. This second break was enough for Coco to seal the French Open. Sabalenka saved one match point but couldn’t save the second one.

Back-to-back losses for the World No. 1

Aryna Sabalenka is one of the best players of her generation. Her journey at the top started in 2023, when she won her first Grand Slam in Australia. Since 2023, Sabalenka has featured in nine out of the 10 Grand Slams held. The 27-year-old has won three, including two Australian Open titles and one US Open title. She has reached three finals and has never been out before the quarter-final stage.

2025 has been a bit disappointing for Sabalenka. She lost a chance to win three Australian Open in a row. This defeat against Gauff has stopped her from adding a fourth Grand Slam. Aryna has never won a Grand Slam on clay or grass. She will be eyeing a comeback in Wimbledon 2025 and looks to end her losing streak in the finals.
