FIFA World Cup 2026: Opening Weekend Match Previews & Predictions

Before we dive in — these previews and predictions are powered by BetBot, TalkingBets’ AI-driven predictions engine. BetBot crunches form, head-to-heads, squad data, and expert consensus so you don’t have to. Whether you’re a seasoned punter or just getting into the game, BetBot helps you make smarter, more informed calls. More on that at the end — but first, football.

Welcome to the Biggest World Cup in History

The wait is finally over. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is here — and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before.

For the first time ever, the tournament is being hosted by three nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It’s a historic first, and the scale reflects it. This is the 23rd edition of the World Cup and by far the largest, expanding from 32 to 48 teams competing across 16 cities and 104 matches — 40 more games than Qatar 2022. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with the final to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — and for the first time ever, it will feature a halftime show, headlined by Madonna, Shakira, and BTS, with the performance curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

The three host nations span a distance of over 4,400 km — from Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to BC Place in Vancouver. Eleven stadiums are in the US, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The new format features 12 groups of four, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a Round of 32. Mexico becomes the first country to host three men’s World Cups, and the Estadio Azteca becomes the first stadium to host three World Cup tournaments. The prize fund has jumped 50% from Qatar, with every team guaranteed at least $10.5 million.

In short: bigger, bolder, louder. This is the World Cup that football has been building toward. Here’s your guide to the opening weekend’s action.

FRIDAY, 12 JUNE (All times ET)

🇲🇽 Mexico vs 🇿🇦 South Africa — Group A

Mexico VS SouthAfrica

Estadio Azteca, Mexico City | 3:00 PM ET | Opening Match of the Tournament

There’s something beautifully full-circle about this one. The 2010 World Cup in South Africa opened with Mexico vs Bafana Bafana. Sixteen years later, they’re doing it again — only this time it’s Mexico’s ground, Mexico’s crowd, and Mexico’s moment.

The Azteca becomes the first stadium to host three World Cup opening matches (after 1970 and 1986), and the weight of an entire nation sits on El Tri’s shoulders. Mexico qualified automatically as co-hosts and has been in solid form — seven games unbeaten heading into the tournament, including draws against Portugal and Belgium, and wins over Ghana (2-0) and Australia (1-0). But history haunts them: they were knocked out in the group stage at Qatar 2022 for the first time since 1978.

Key man is Edson Álvarez, the captain and midfield anchor on loan at Fenerbahçe from West Ham. After surgery on an ankle injury earlier in 2026, he returned to fitness in time and even played 60 minutes against Australia in May. Up front, Raúl Jiménez remains the main goal threat — and Mexico’s ability to hurt teams beyond him is one of the big question marks about their tournament.

South Africa are back at a World Cup for the first time since they hosted it in 2010, qualifying through a dramatic CAF campaign that nearly went wrong before they edged out Nigeria. Their squad is heavily influenced by Mamelodi Sundowns, and they come in on poor form — just one win in their last six internationals, with no wins in three pre-tournament friendlies. They arrive as clear underdogs in Group A, with prediction markets rating their chances of topping the group as slim.

Still, South Africa’s pace on the counter and the energy of Bafana Bafana at a World Cup opener should make this competitive, particularly in the first half.

The altitude factor is real. Mexico City sits at roughly 2,250 metres above sea level. Mexico live with it. South Africa don’t. By the 60th minute, that could matter.

Prediction: Mexico win, 2-0. Hosts do what the home crowd demands — a professional, controlled performance. Clean sheet likely. South Africa show heart but can’t find a way through.

🇰🇷 South Korea vs 🇨🇿 Czechia — Group A

Estadio AKRON, Guadalajara | 10:00 PM ET

This is the second match of the tournament and one of the more even contests on paper. South Korea (ranked 25th) vs Czechia (41st) — neither is expected to trouble Mexico at the top of the group, but between themselves, this could go either way.

South Korea come in with Son Heung-min leading the line in what is expected to be his last World Cup. The former Tottenham star, now at LAFC in MLS, remains a massive influence, and around him the Koreans have genuine quality — Kim Min-jae at the back (one of Europe’s best centre-backs), and Lee Kang-in providing creative spark from the right flank. The Koreans arrived after wins over El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago in warm-up games, but their defensive setup raised questions after a troubled March window.

Czechia had to fight hard just to be here, navigating a dramatic European playoff to qualify. But they arrive as a team with purpose. Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen) and Tomáš Souček (West Ham) form the spine of their starting eleven. Souček’s power and Schick’s finishing ability make them genuinely dangerous. Czechia also have an ace up their sleeve from set pieces — they scored seven goals from corners during European qualification, more than any other European nation.

Watch out too for 17-year-old Hugo Sochůrek, the midfield prodigy who forced his way into the squad after a sensational senior debut.

Most prediction models favour South Korea, though the margin between these two sides is narrow enough to make this genuinely competitive.

Prediction: South Korea win, 1-0. Son delivers on the big stage when it matters most. Czechia make it uncomfortable but the Koreans’ quality edges it.

SATURDAY, 13 JUNE (All times ET)

🇨🇦 Canada vs 🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina — Group B

BMO Field, Toronto | 3:00 PM ET

Canada’s World Cup moment has arrived. The co-hosts open their campaign on home soil in front of a sold-out BMO Field in Toronto, and the atmosphere will be electric.

This is a Canadian side with genuine European quality — and that’s a sentence that would have seemed absurd a decade ago. Jonathan David, the Juventus striker who scored six goals and four assists in Serie A this season, is Canada’s record scorer and the focal point of everything they do going forward. Alphonso Davies — included in the squad, though his fitness for the opener remains a question — brings Bayern Munich class at left back. And Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal), who scored six La Liga goals this season, gives them a real direct threat on the right.

Jesse Marsch’s side has gone just one defeat in their last 15 games in 90 minutes. The question is whether that preparation translates in competitive football — Canada lost on penalties to Guatemala in the 2025 Gold Cup quarter-finals and finished fourth in the 2024 Copa América.

Bosnia qualified through a remarkable playoff run, beating Italy in the final to spark street celebrations across the country. They netted 17 goals in eight qualifying group games and finished just two points behind Austria. Their danger man is Ermedin Demirović (VfB Stuttgart), who scored 12 Bundesliga goals this season. The veteran Edin Džeko provides experience and threat from deep. Bosnia lack depth, but their core is hardened, and they’ll fancy a result.

Prediction: Canada win, 1-0. Home advantage, atmosphere, and the quality of David and Davies tips it. Don’t expect fireworks — this has the shape of a tight, nervy opener.

🇺🇸 USA vs 🇵🇾 Paraguay — Group D

USA vs Paraguay

SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles | 9:00 PM ET

One of the most anticipated matches of the opening weekend. The United States, co-hosts, playing at one of the world’s most glamorous venues in front of a monster crowd. The pressure is immense.

Christian Pulisic — ‘Captain America’, AC Milan’s man — leads this team as its most experienced attacker. He has 33 international goals in 85 caps. He arrives after a solid if injury-disrupted club season, and on his day remains one of the most dangerous players this squad possesses. Behind him in the striker race, Folarin Balogun (AS Monaco, 19 goals across all competitions) and Ricardo Pepi (PSV, also 19 goals) are pushing hard for the starting spot — a genuine dilemma Mauricio Pochettino calls “a good problem to have.” Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie anchor the midfield.

Paraguay are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals. Under Gustavo Alfaro, they are defensively ferocious — conceding just 10 goals across their entire 18-match CONMEBOL qualifying campaign. Their captain Gustavo Gómez (Palmeiras) is an absolute wall in central defence. On the break, Miguel Almirón (Atlanta United) and Julio Enciso (Strasbourg) provide real danger.

The USA lead the all-time head-to-head 4-2-3 across nine meetings, including a recent 2-1 friendly win in November 2025. But Paraguay are set up to frustrate — they’ll sit deep in a 4-4-2 and look to hurt the hosts on the counter. World Cup openers are notoriously cagey.

Prediction: USA win, 1-0. The home environment eventually tells, with Pulisic the difference maker. Expect a tight, tense night rather than a rout.

🇶🇦 Qatar vs 🇨🇭 Switzerland — Group B

Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara | 3:00 PM ET

Qatar arrive at the second World Cup in their history with something to prove after a dismal home tournament in 2022, where they became the first host nation to exit the group stage without a single win. Their build-up for 2026 has been disrupted, and they arrive ranked 44th in the world.

Switzerland, by contrast, are the most experienced side in this group and arrive as Group B favourites. Ranked 14th in the world, the Swiss have the structure, discipline, and big-game composure that makes them dangerous at every tournament. They’ve made it out of the group stage at each of the last four World Cups.

This should be Switzerland’s to control, but Qatar have enough pace going forward to make it uncomfortable.

Prediction: Switzerland win, 2-0. Qatar struggle to find a way through against a well-organised Swiss side. Expect a professional, controlled performance from the Europeans.

🇧🇷 Brazil vs 🇲🇦 Morocco — Group C

Brazil vs Morocco

MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey | 6:00 PM ET

The glamour tie of the opening weekend, and arguably the most intriguing match of the entire first round.

Brazil arrive under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, who left Real Madrid for this job — bringing structure and clarity to a side that hasn’t won the World Cup since 2002. Vinicius Júnior (Real Madrid) is the man everyone expects to be the difference: electric on the left flank with Ballon d’Or pedigree and genuine pace to trouble any defence. His international record — nine goals in 49 caps — has been a long-running source of frustration, and this World Cup is his stage to finally deliver at international level. Raphinha (Barcelona) was Brazil’s top scorer in CONMEBOL qualifying with five goals. Neymar — Brazil’s all-time top scorer — is also in the squad, though a calf injury cloud lingers. Alisson Becker (Liverpool) and Marquinhos (PSG) provide world-class steel at both ends.

Morocco, though, are no soft touch — quite the opposite. They reached the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar 2022, the furthest any African nation has ever gone. Under new coach Mohamed Ouahbi, the Atlas Lions are compact, tactically disciplined, and dangerous on the break. Achraf Hakimi (PSG) captains the team and is one of the best attacking full-backs in world football — relentless going forward, difficult to get past defensively. Brahim Díaz (Real Madrid) won the 2025 AFCON Golden Boot with five goals and is the primary creator. Yassine Bounou in goal is a two-time African Goalkeeper of the Year.

The key duel: Vinicius Júnior vs Achraf Hakimi down Brazil’s left/Morocco’s right. It’s a genuine world-class matchup that could decide the game.

Multiple respected simulation models give Morocco a real chance of winning this match — a genuinely plausible scenario given how organised and hard to break down they are.

Prediction: Draw, 1-1. Both sides are too good and too well-organised to be pulled apart in a cautious opener. Expect quality, tension, and probably a tactical masterclass from both coaches. Morocco will make Brazil work extremely hard for everything.

SUNDAY, 14 JUNE (All times ET)

🇭🇹 Haiti vs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland — Group C

Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts | 9:00 PM ET

Scotland are back at a World Cup for the first time since 1998 — 28 years of hurt finally ended. This is a genuinely historic moment for Scottish football. Haiti, meanwhile, return to the tournament for the first time in 52 years, having last appeared in 1974.

Scotland have genuine quality: Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) is one of the most reliable left-backs in world football, Scott McTominay (Napoli) has been one of Serie A’s standout midfielders this season, and Che Adams leads the attack. Steve Clarke’s men showed their credentials with a stunning 4-0 win over Bolivia in their final warm-up.

Haiti came into the tournament on a high after a 2-0 win over New Zealand. They’re a team built on energy and belief rather than star power, but they play with genuine intensity and shouldn’t be dismissed. At the same time, they’ve been outscored 8-2 in three matches against World Cup teams since the start of 2024.

Prediction: Scotland win, 2-0. The quality difference tells eventually, though Haiti’s occasion and emotion will make the first half competitive. McTominay and Robertson should be the key figures.

🇦🇺 Australia vs 🇹🇷 Türkiye — Group D

BC Place, Vancouver | 12:00 AM ET (Sat 13 → Sun 14)

A fascinating clash between two nations hungry to make a statement in what is an unusually open World Cup group. Australia are appearing at their sixth consecutive World Cup. They reached the Round of 16 in Qatar 2022 — their best result since 2006 — and will be eager to build on that.

Türkiye return to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when they famously finished third. The gap was 24 years — but the squad they’ve assembled suggests the wait could be very worthwhile. The story of Turkish football right now is their extraordinary crop of young talent. Arda Güler (Real Madrid, 21) was named the Champions League Revelation of the Season. Thierry Henry once described him as “an undisputed, elite, world-class talent.” Kenan Yıldız (Juventus, 21) scored 10 Serie A goals and seven assists this season. The seasoned Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Inter Milan) anchors the midfield and is the engine room around which Turkey operate.

Australia will look to their new generation too. Nestory Irankunda brings electric pace down the flank and has emerged as one of the Socceroos’ most dangerous weapons.

Turkey arrive in strong recent form — winning four of their last five internationals — and most prediction models favour them to win this opener.

Prediction: Turkey win, 2-1. Güler and Yıldız are the difference — youth, talent and tempo on the night. Australia give it everything and make it competitive, but Turkey have too much creative quality to be denied.

🇩🇪 Germany vs 🇨🇼 Curaçao — Group E

Germany vs Curaçao

NRG Stadium, Houston | 1:00 PM ET

The most one-sided fixture of the opening weekend on paper — though Curaçao will cherish every second of their World Cup debut.

Germany arrive under Julian Nagelsmann in exceptional form — eight wins in their last ten internationals, including a 7-0 win over Bosnia and a 6-0 win over Slovakia. Florian Wirtz (Liverpool), 22 years old, is one of the most exciting players in the tournament and the creative heartbeat of this German side. Nick Woltemade (Newcastle) leads the line with seven Premier League goals. The German machine looks well-oiled and genuinely dangerous.

Curaçao — a small Caribbean island with a population of roughly 150,000 — are the smallest nation by population ever to reach a World Cup. They won two playoff shootouts just to be here. That is their triumph. Their most recognisable player is Tahith Chong (Sheffield United), but the gap in quality between these sides is stark. In a 2024 friendly, Argentina beat Curaçao 7-0 with Messi scoring a hat-trick in the first half.

Germany will want a big goal difference early to set the tone for the group.

Prediction: Germany win, 5-0. A routine, professional opening statement from the Germans. Curaçao will be proud just to have arrived here — and they should be.

Final Thoughts

What a weekend of football we have in store. From the historic opening match at the Azteca to potential upset candidate Morocco going toe-to-toe with Brazil at MetLife, this is a World Cup that already feels different. Bigger, louder, more unpredictable — and we’re only just getting started.
