Michael Carrick Set to Return as Manchester United Interim Boss After Talks with Club Legends

Manchester United are moving fast to appoint a new interim manager after parting ways with Ruben Amorim. The club has held discussions with both Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with a decision expected soon so the chosen candidate can hit the ground running.

Carrick Leads the Race

Michael Carrick, a former midfielder and assistant coach at United, is now the frontrunner for the role. Talks are at an advanced stage, with both parties close to finalising an agreement that would see him take charge until the end of the season.

The club wants the appointment wrapped up quickly so Carrick can begin training sessions and prepare for the crucial Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Carrick is believed to have impressed United’s leadership with a clear plan to stabilise the squad. With United already out of domestic cup competitions, the focus is entirely on improving Premier League form and pushing for a Champions League spot.

Solskjaer in the Frame, But Carrick Ahead

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who managed the club from 2018 to 2021, was also approached and shared his ideas in talks led by director of football Jason Wilcox. While Solskjaer remains a respected figure at Old Trafford, Carrick appears to have the edge following positive meetings with club executives.

Interim coach Darren Fletcher, who stepped in temporarily after Amorim’s exit, is expected to return to his behind-the-scenes role once the new manager is confirmed.

If Carrick takes the reins, he’s likely to bring in his own coaching staff. Names such as Jonathan Woodgate and Steve Holland have been mentioned, with Wayne Rooney also rumoured to be considered for a supporting role.
