Battle On The Clay: Top Seeds Eye Monte Carlo Glory

Shilpa Rajan     April 12, 2025

Battle on the Clay Court has commenced as preparations for Roland Garros 2025 begin. Top tennis stars have arrived in France for the Monte Carlo Masters, a pivotal tournament held every April. This event sets the tone for the only clay court Grand Slam of the year. The 2025 edition marks the 118th chapter of this historic competition.

This is a men’s singles and men’s double tournament. Rafael Nadal has been the most successful player ever to play in Monte Carlo. The Spaniard has won 11 tournaments, with eight consecutive wins from 2005 to 2012. Novak Djokovic has been the Mr. Consistent. He will be making his 19th appearance in this tournament.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has enjoyed playing here in Monte Carlo. The 26-year-old Greek has been a part of seven ATP Masters 1000 finals. He has won three out of these and all of them here in Monte Carlo. Last year, Tsitsipas won the final against Casper Ruud in straight sets. This shows that every player has to be taken seriously on the tour.

Battle on the Clay court: Betting odds

The clay surface is not a strong point for every player. Only a few players have mastered this surface, Rafael Nadal being the biggest. It is a game of strength and is completely different from any other surface. Due to this, one player is favourite to win the Monte Carlo Masters.

Carlos Alcaraz has betting odds of 7/5 to win this tournament. He is the defending Roland Garros champion. That makes him a clear favourite to win against all the top seeds in this tournament.

Next, we have Novak Djokovic in the line. Fresh from his Miami Open final loss, the Serb will aim to win his third title in Monte Carlo. The odds of Djokovic winning are around 11/2. Alexander Zverev is next in the line. The No. 1 seed in this tournament has an odd of 17/2.

Battle on the Clay

One player who has a chance to win is Stefano Tsitsipas. The Greek tennis star is the defending champion. He has won three out of the last four tournaments here in Monte Carlo. Tsitsipas has struggled for consistency, but this could be his moment. His odds are similar to Zverev’s at 17/2.

Results so far

The round of 64 has begun for all players except the top eight seeds. They get a direct entry into the next round. Top players like Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, Holger Rune, and others need to play an extra round. Some of these players have already advanced to the next round.

Daniil Medvedev got a big win over Karen Khachanov in three sets. Medvedev won the first and third sets to book his place in the last 32. Ben Shelton made an early exit from the tournament. He lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain. Experienced campaigner, Gael Monfils booked his place in the next round but Stan Wawrinka suffered an early exit. Rune, Dimitrov, and Tiafoe are yet to play their first round. They will be eyeing a comfortable win in their opening encounter.
