Treble Chasers: How City’s Treble Would Compare To United’s ’99 Success
Manchester City are two wins away from winning a historic treble, something the red half of Manchester achieved way back in 1999. We take a look at how City’s potential treble would compare to United’s 1999 achievement…
Let’s compare Manchester United’s treble success in 1999 with the potential treble success of Manchester City in 2023.
Manchester United’s Treble Success in 1999:
In the 1998-1999 season, Manchester United, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, achieved a historic treble by winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.

Premier League:
- Manchester United had an outstanding league campaign, winning 22 matches, drawing 13, and losing only 3. They finished with 79 points, securing the Premier League title.
FA Cup:
- In the FA Cup, Manchester United had a challenging journey. They played a total of 8 matches, winning 6, drawing 1, and losing 1. They defeated Newcastle United in the final with a score of 2-0.
UEFA Champions League:
- Manchester United’s Champions League triumph included some remarkable comebacks. They played a total of 13 matches, winning 10, drawing 2, and losing 1. In the final, they faced Bayern Munich and achieved a dramatic comeback by scoring two goals in injury time to win the match 2-1.
Overall, Manchester United’s record in their treble-winning season was as follows:
- Premier League: 22 wins, 13 draws, 3 losses
- FA Cup: 6 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss
- Champions League: 10 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss
Now let’s hypothetically compare Manchester United’s treble with the potential treble success of Manchester City in 2023:
Manchester City in 2023:
Hypothetically, if Manchester City were to achieve a treble in the 2022-2023 season, we can anticipate their potential performance based on their recent success and squad strength.
Premier League:
- Manchester City has sealed their third Premier League title in a row as Arsenal slipped up against Nottingham Forest. They have scored 94 goals and picked up 89 points, with a match to go. They picked up an amazing 12 wins in their last 13 games and successfully chased down Arsenal’s 8 point lead to run away with the league.
FA Cup:
- Man City has progressed to the final of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest club knockout tournament. Apart from their impressive 4-0 win against Chelsea and 1-0 win against Arsenal in the last two rounds, what makes their run to the final even more impressive is that they have not conceded a goal in the competition thus far. An FA Cup final against the other side of Manchester awaits on the 3rd of June.
UEFA Champions League:
- Manchester City overpowered a high-flying Real Madrid team led by Carlo Ancelloti to progress to the finals of the Champions League with an impressive 5-1 aggregate win. The win stamped their superiority and led to many referring to City as “the best team in the world”. If they can beat Inter Milan in Istanbul on 11th June , I don’t think anyone in the world would dispute that.
Victories in the FA Cup as well as the Champions League would definitely cement Manchester City’s treble as one of the greatest achievements by a football club. Unquestionably, the manner of their victories and the sheer dominance in the League, Cup and Champions League mean that if they were to win the treble, their achievement would surpass that of the 1999 United team.
