Carlos Alcaraz Shines Bright with First Monte Carlo Masters Triumph

Shilpa Rajan     April 24, 2025

Carlos Alcaraz is following the footsteps of his former countryman and legend, Rafael Nadal. The 21-year-old is showing his dominance on clay as he went on the win the Monte Carlo Masters 2025. This was his 14th ATP Tour title and first one in Monte Carlo. Carlos Alcaraz has moved to second place in the ATP rankings. He is the defending French Open champion and has a 17-1 record on the clay surface since featuring in the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz: Three sets thriller

The Spaniard faced Italian tennis compatriot Lorenzo Musetti. This tournament was full of upsets, like the other clay surface tournaments. Not everyone is comfortable playing on the clay surface, while others have mastered the art of playing on the hard surface. Alcaraz is one of them.

Musetti made a better start to the final. He won the first set 6-3. However, he triggered Alcaraz after winning the first set. The Spaniard lost only one game in the second set and won 6-1. He was even better in the third set. Alcaraz gave no chance to his opponent and won 6-0. Carlos was better on the first serve and won most of his points. He also converted six out of the eight break points earned. Musetti converted only two of the nine break points earned.

This was a big win for Alcaraz ahead of the Barcelona Open. He is building a lot of momentum for the Roland Garros. After a disappointing quarter-final exit in Australia, this will be a big chance to add his fifth Grand Slam.

Which big names failed in Monte Carlo?

Matteo Berrettini produced the first upset of the tournament. The Italian eliminated the No. 1 seed, Alexander Zverev, in the Round of 32. Zverev was playing his first match of the tournament but the Italian stood out as the better player. Zverev took the first set but lost the next two. His poor form on the court continues with some early exits in major tournaments.

Holger Rune’s injury in the second set against Nuno Borges knocked him out in the Round of 16.

Novak Djokovic was probably the biggest name to exit that stage. Fresh from his Miami Open final, Djokovic was aiming to build some momentum for his 25th Grand Slam. However, his opponent had some other ideas. Alejandro Tabilo took no time and outclassed the former World No. 1. Tabilo won the first set 6-3 and took the second one 6-4.

Djokovic showed some signs of struggle with his first serve. He only managed to deliver 54% of his first serves. The 37-year-old Serb will look to build some momentum and deliver at the big stage.

25-year-old Spanish player, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, had a tournament to remember. He eliminated Ben Shelton in the Round of 64. Fokina defeated Etcheverry, Jack Draper, and Alexei Popyrin to reach the last four. His semi-final was against Carlos Alcaraz. The 2022 edition’s runner-up was unable to beat his countryman, but this will be a big boost heading into the big stage.
