Wimbledon 2024 began in London with No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini and No. 31 Barbora Krejcikova not even considered dark horses. Paolini, known as a clay court specialist, had just made a spectacular run to the French Open final last month. Meanwhile, Krejcikova, a former Roland Garros champion, had a tough 2024 season with only three wins in her last seven WTA matches and five first-round exits. Despite this, they adapted superbly to the grass court conditions. Paolini used her swift court movement to defeat big-hitting Donna Vekic in the semis. Krejcikova, with pinpoint serves, neutralized Elena Rybakina’s powerful serve, reaching her first Slam final since the 2021 French Open.

Wimbledon: Paolini edges out Vekic

Jasmine Paolini edged out a tearful Donna Vekic in a thrilling semi-final to become the first Italian to reach a Wimbledon women’s singles final. In one of the tournament’s best matches, Paolini missed two match points and was 8-7 behind in the tie-break before recovering to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8). The match lasted two hours and 51 minutes, making it the longest women’s singles semi-final . Paolini will now face Czech 31st seed Barbora Krejcikova, who made a remarkable comeback against 2022 champion Elena Rybakina. Paolini, who had never won a match at this tournament before this year, has gained popularity for her enthusiasm and incredible shot-making skills. “This match I will remember forever,” she said.
